Цепочка 1. Путь недеяния

От истока к способу действия: безымянное Дао → его закон «само-так» → недеяние как метод → результат сам собой.

  1. wuming — исток безымянен: имя — уже разделение
  2. dao — Дао рождает всё и берёт закон лишь от себя
  3. ziran — закон Дао — его собственная таковость
  4. wuwei — не форсировать: действовать без умысла
  5. shengren — правит недеянием, итог приписывают себе сами

[32] 道常無名。

The Tao, considered as unchanging, has no name.
[25] 道法自然。
The law of the Tao is its being what it is.
[37] 道常無為而無不為。
The Tao in its regular course does nothing (for the sake of doing it), and so there is nothing which it does not do.
[17] 百姓皆謂我自然。
the people all said, 'We are as we are, of ourselves!'

Цепочка 2. Мягкое одолевает твёрдое

Перевёрнутая шкала силы: вода → мягкость как принцип → закон обращения → милосердие сильнее оружия.

  1. water — вода: пользует всё, ни с чем не борясь
  2. rouruo — мягкое и слабое — сторона жизни
  3. fan — слабость — рабочий способ Дао
  4. sanbao — милосердие даёт смелость и победу

[8] 上善若水。

The highest excellence is like (that of) water.
[76] 柔弱者生之徒。
Thus it is that firmness and strength are the concomitants of death; softness and weakness, the concomitants of life.
[40] 弱者道之用。
And weakness marks the course Of Tao's mighty deeds.
[67] 夫慈以戰則勝，以守則固。
Gentleness is sure to be victorious even in battle, and firmly to maintain its ground.

Цепочка 3. Мера против предела

Дисциплина остановки: пустота полезна → знать меру → не доводить до предела → завершить, отступив.

  1. xu — пустота даёт пользу; полнота бесполезна
  2. zhizu — знать меру: довольство — богатство
  3. fan — доведённое до предела поворачивает вспять
  4. wuwei — кончив дело, отступи в тень

[11] 故有之以為利，無之以為用。

Therefore, what has a (positive) existence serves for profitable adaptation, and what has not that for (actual) usefulness.
[46] 故知足之足，常足矣。
Therefore the sufficiency of contentment is an enduring and unchanging sufficiency.
[30] 物壯則老，是謂不道，不道早已。
When things have attained their strong maturity they become old. This may be said to be not in accordance with the Tao: and what is not in accordance with it soon comes to an end.
[9] 功遂身退天之道。
When the work is done, and one's name is becoming distinguished, to withdraw into obscurity is the way of Heaven.

Цепочка 4. Управлять меньше

Политический хребет: править недеянием → быть незаметным → ставить себя ниже → добродетель-сверху есть симптом упадка.

  1. wuwei — брать мир свободой от действия
  2. shengren — лучший правитель тот, о ком едва знают
  3. water — быть ниже, как море над потоками
  4. de — 仁義禮 всплывают там, где утрачено Дао

[57] 我無為，而民自化

I will do nothing (of purpose), and the people will be transformed of themselves;
[17] 太上，下知有之。
In the highest antiquity, (the people) did not know that there were (their rulers).
[66] 以其不爭，故天下莫能與之爭。
Because he does not strive, no one finds it possible to strive with him.
[18] 大道廢，有仁義。
When the Great Tao (Way or Method) ceased to be observed, benevolence and righteousness came into vogue.
